What Is a QR Code?

A QR code is the little square barcode you scan with your phone to open a link, join WiFi or save a contact. Here is what it is, how it works, and what you can put in one.

How a QR code works

A QR code (Quick Response code) stores information as a pattern of black and white squares. When your phone camera looks at it, the camera decodes the pattern back into text, usually a website link, and offers to open it. Modern iPhone and Android cameras scan QR codes automatically, with no separate app needed.

What can a QR code contain?

• A website link, the most common use, such as a menu, form or page.
• WiFi details, so guests join your network without typing a password.
• A contact card, phone number, email, or a payment link.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

A static QR code has the destination baked in and works forever. A dynamic one adds a redirect so you can change the target or track scans, but it depends on a paid service staying online. For most people a static code is all they need.
