How to Scan a Document to PDF (Free, No App Needed)

You do not need CamScanner or any other app to scan paper. Here is how to scan a document straight to PDF from your phone or computer browser, free, with automatic edge detection and shadow removal. Nothing is uploaded.

Scan a document in four steps

Scanning with your phone camera

On iPhone and Android the scanner opens your camera inside the page and tracks the document in real time. An orange border locks onto the page edges and four corner dots ride along with it. Touch any dot and the frame freezes so you can drag that corner exactly where you want it before you capture. A page on a contrasting surface, like white paper on a wooden desk, locks on fastest.

Fix the crop with corner handles

After the capture you get the same four corner handles on the frozen photo. The automatic crop is usually right, but anything can be corrected by hand in a second. This also works for photos you upload from your library, so an old snapshot of a whiteboard or receipt can be straightened into a clean scan too.

Choose a look: color, grayscale or black and white

Scanner apps do not output the raw photo. They clean it up, and this one does the same with four looks. Magic Colour is the default: it removes shadows, whitens the paper and keeps logos, stamps and highlights in color. Grayscale and Black and White give the classic photocopy styles, and Original keeps the photo untouched apart from the crop. A Lighter or Darker slider fine-tunes any look, and in Black and White it controls how much faint detail counts as ink.

Scan multiple pages into one PDF

Tap Add page after each scan and keep going. Every page appears in a film strip where you can remove any single page. The download builds one PDF with a sheet per page, or you can grab the pages as separate JPG images instead.

Share or download your scan

On top of the PDF and JPG downloads there is a Share button on phones. It opens the normal share sheet, so the finished PDF goes straight to Mail, Messages, WhatsApp or any other app on your phone without saving it first.

Tips for a clean scan

A CamScanner alternative with no app and no upload

Everything above runs inside your browser. There is no app to install, no account, no watermark and no upload: the photo, the crop and the finished PDF are all created on your device and never sent to a server. That matters for the documents people actually scan, like contracts, IDs and medical papers. It works on iPhone, Android and on a desktop with a webcam or an uploaded photo.

Frequently asked questions

Is the document scanner really free?

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no page limits. It runs on your own device instead of a paid server, so there is nothing to pay for.

Are my documents uploaded to a server?

No. The whole scanner runs in your browser. Photos, crops and the finished PDF are created on your device and never leave it, so even sensitive paperwork stays private.

Can I scan multiple pages into one PDF?

Yes. Scan a page, tap Add page, and repeat as many times as you need. Every page lands in one film strip and the download builds a single PDF with one sheet per page.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in the mobile browser on both, with live edge detection in the viewfinder. There is no app to install, which is the point.

How do I make the scan black and white?

After scanning, pick the Black and White look. The default Magic Colour look keeps colors and whitens the paper, and a Lighter or Darker slider fine-tunes either look.
