Social Media Character Limits
Every platform cuts you off at a different point. Here are the current character limits for the major social networks, plus an easy way to check your count before you post.
Character limits by platform
- X (Twitter): 280 characters for a standard post.
- Instagram: up to 2,200 characters in a caption, but only the first ~125 show before "more".
- TikTok: up to 2,200 characters in a caption.
- LinkedIn: about 3,000 characters for a post, 220 for the headline.
- Facebook: very long limits, but shorter posts perform better.
Why the first line matters most
Even where the limit is generous, most platforms hide everything after the first line or two behind a "more" link. So the character count that really matters is the opening hook, keep it tight.
Count your characters before posting
Rather than guess, paste your draft into a character counter and watch the count as you type. It shows how many characters you have left for a 280-character X post and other common limits, and turns red when you go over.
