How to Reduce Image File Size

Photos that are too big get rejected by upload forms and bounce back from email. Here is how to reduce an image's file size without a noticeable drop in quality.

Two ways to make an image smaller

There are two levers: compression (lowering quality slightly to save space) and resizing (reducing the pixel dimensions). Doing a bit of both usually cuts a photo to a fraction of its size with no visible difference.

Reduce file size step by step

Hit a specific limit

If a form says "max 2 MB," compress, check the new size, and nudge the quality down until you are under it. Converting to WebP gets you the smallest file of all.
